Gwar-Bloody Pit of Horror
Metal Blade
November 9, 2010
I always falsly consider Gwar to be a novelty live act (there's no need to describe their stage show), and I always forget that they have a knack for writing some killer metal. Despite their sophmoric looking artwork that reminds me of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book, this record slays. The musicianship is strong, full of excellent drumming and thick guitar lines, and the music is heavy as a truck. Though considered a metal band, Gwar covers the gauntlet of heavy music. There's punk, hardcore and rock, along with many styles of metal. They blend everything together quite nicely, making for a mixed styled album where nothing sounds out of place.
Most people know what Gwar sounds like by now, and Bloody Pit of Horror doesn't stray from their style at all. If you're a fan of Gwar, you're going to want this. If you only like them for their live show, give this a listen and be plenty surprised. If you don't like them at all, then you're out of luck.
