Cobra Skulls-Bringing the War Home
Fat
January 18, 2011

Cobra Skulls remind me of the phenom that fills the seats of minor league ballparks before they get called up to the big time. They made a hell of a name for themselves on Red Scare before making the movie to Fat and releasing their best material to date (with this only being a five song EP, I liken it to September call ups), wowing everybody and giving everyone hope for the next season.

These songs may seem like pop punk songs on the surface, but there’s so much more going on. Whether it be the horns closing out “Doomsday Parade,” The Clash influence hidden in the guitar and bass work of “Hot Sand, “ or the syncopated rhythms they use throughout the EP, Cobra Skulls give the listener so much more than catchy songs. They give fans of musical prowess a lot to enjoy while keeping things catchy and enjoyable enough for the casual fan. Their cover of Bad Religion’s “Give You Nothing” is pretty spot on as well.

At only five songs long, it leaves the listener yearning for more; much more. Going back to baseball metaphor, fans would be expecting their upcoming full length to be an all star and possible MVP candidate. I like that Cobra Skulls set the bar high, though I’m hoping they can live up to my expectations.
