Clouds-We Are Above You
Hydra Head
June 17, 2008

I never listened to the first Clouds album, but I've read about this one sounding different so it doesn't matter all that much anyway. But, listening to this band with untainted ears has benefitted the experience. Clouds are a band that follow many spectrums under the punk umbrella. They have post punk, hardcore, post hardcore, indie, spastic moments and other elements that make for a well rounded band. They're not afraid to throw in a random part or mix things up if they think it will benefit the song.

The album sounds like the band has ADD, as they don't stick to one style very long. Some songs remind me of Christianson, others are fast or mid tempo punk songs. The good thing is that they all sound well together, flowing like a waterfall in a beautiful area. The style changes actually add a lot to this album, as it doesn't give the listener even a chance to get bored.

The riffs, especially during their more rock numbers, are memorable, and they use that to their advantage. Clouds are a band that know what they're doing, and they do it so damn well that its hard not to admire.
