I really thought that I written a review for this album when Topshelf Records first released it months ago. I was planning on just writing that nothing was added to this pressing, but now a full review is coming.
With the breakup of Verse, I can see Defeater jumping right into their still warm graves, helping fans quickly get over that loss. Defeater mix fast hardcore with melodic guitar lines, epic hardcore parts and some slower guitar work that breaks things up nicely. And then there's the acoustic part in "Prophet in Plain Clothes," which is a huge "what the fuck" moment, but a pleasant one at that. It shows the range that Defeater has, especially the voice of honcho Jay Maas. It also shows that Defeater is not afraid to explore unchartered (hardcore) territory, leaving an unpredictable aura to any future release.
This is a strong and compelling debut. Defeater is tight and have great songwriting chops, making them one of the most exciting hardcore bands out there right now, especially in a time when others seem to be dropping like heatstroke.
