With one of the funniest band names I've heard in awhile, I wasn't quite sure how seriously I Hate My Ex would take their music. I figured that they would be playing melodic pop punk that was more on the pop side, and I was pretty much right, but they were more mature than I was expecting.
When it comes to crafting a good pop punk song, I Hate My Ex are pretty damn solid. The hooks are there and there's a certain bounce in their step that makes for plenty of pogo. There is a big element of fun to their sound, which is a must when it comes this style. Where they lose me is their use of electronics. "Song 37" and "Hey! I Can Sing Like a SoCal Douche Bag" takes me out of the album, but their other songs make up for it. I am pretty fond of their Taylor Swift cover of "You Belong With Me" as well (I didn't know that this was Taylor Swift until reading their Myspace page).
This is a good debut from a band that still has a lot of room to grow. They can write a strong pop punk song, and they will only get better with time and experience. They need to drop the electronics, but I see brightness in their future.
