Psyopus-Odd Senses
Metal Blade
February 17, 2009

To say that Psyopus aren't talented musicians would be the equivalent of saying your mother didn't go through an immense amount of pain giving birth to you (not to mention all that weird stuff that goes on during the nine months of pregnancy). Part of their songwriting talent, and this was meant to be, can be tough to take. I personally learned this one night after falling asleep with my iTunes on. I woke up, freaked out in the middle of the night, wondering what the hell was coming out of my speakers. It sounded like a dangerous riot being led by Freddy Krueger. The guitar riffs are scary, and they have a weird way of putting everything together. Needless to say, I put on something a little less demon sounding before going back to sleep.

In the right mood, there are many things to appreciate about Psyopus. I love the arrangements. I discover something new each time I listen to Odd Senses. The speed and flawless playing are quite admirable, especially when combined with what each band member is actually playing. Their ideas are creative, not afraid to think outside the box and try some things that other bands haven't thought of yet.

Psyopus fall into that Dillenger Escape Plan mold of bands that emerged in the early 2000s, but they have set themselves apart and opened themselves to new audiences (how many metal bands have opened for Hank III?). I feel that these guys are at the head of this musical movement, not just keeping the throne warm while DEP decides to make a new album.
