Thomas Giles-Pulse
Metal Blade
February 1, 2011
Giles wasn’t that great of a project, so Between the Buried and Me vocalist Tommy Rogers went with a new label and new moniker for his latest solo project, dubbed Thomas Giles. The end result is much better, even if there is a drop off after the first half of the album.
Anyone expecting something super technical as Between the Buried and Me will be sadly mistaken. This reminds me of the slower and more melodic portions that BTBAM uses sparingly, mixed with electronica and a little bit of heaviness (especially in “Medic,” my favorite song on the album). He gets a little too experimental for my liking after “Medic,” which has me skipping until “Armchair Travel,” a pretty sounding acoustic song that showcases his voice and his ability to succeed with the barest of instruments (guitar and voice).
This is a decent offering, but I’m not exactly sure whom it should be marketed to. This album has a few different styles that it’s hard to nail down a demographic. My suggestion is to check out a few songs and see how you feel. There are some gems on here; gems that overrule the duds.
