Chixdiggit-Safeways Here We Come

Being in a band with a bassist that loves pop punk and owns a van, thus controlling song selections on the iPod (he enjoys random), I’ve come to the conclusion that a lot of bands playing this style sound nearly exactly the same. I’ve always enjoyed the style, but would listen to it sparingly, not realizing how similar they all sound. The good thing about pop punk bands is that there’s no outside the box writing. Everything is safe and predictable, and there’s no need to worry about a pop punk band changing style to “branch out” to a larger or different audience.

Chixdiggit! bring nothing new to the table. Their songs have more sugar than children’s cereal and the lyrics are a bit on the silly side. The tempos are medium and the music is relatively simple. But it’s the hooks that reel me in, and these seven songs are full of them. I was moderately enjoying this album, but I realized that I was singing along to all the hooks after only a few listens. They are memorable and easy to get stuck in your head. That’s what pop punk is all about.
