Thursday-Common Existence
Epitaph
February 17, 2009

Thursday unknowingly dug themselves a big hole when they wrote Full Collapse. That album was so solid from start to finish and came at the right time, doing something completely different and breathing new life into music, that they got swept up in a whirlpool that took them through two major label full lengths, a split EP with Envy and another EP and whatever the hell you want to call Kill the House Lights on Victory. While all of these releases were good in their own right, they never lived up to what people thought they would be. Now on Epitaph, it seems like Thursday can start fresh, and they came out of these new gates swinging with a wild focus.

Common Existence is Thursday on hyperdrive. Everything is bumped up a few notches. The songs have that emotion and sincerity that brought them to the forefront of everyone's ears and then some. They go the extra mile, adding more urgency to each song. Geoff Rickley's voice commanding, demanding the attention of listeners, and the music paints a lovely background.

Though their chance for mainstream fame may be gone (and quite a loss it was to the mainstream), Thursday are still plugging away, playing the music that feels right to them, and doing a damn good job at it. Thursday was never a band to sell out on their beliefs or musical ideas, and they have a back catalogue with weight lifter's strength. I don't know if Common Existence will have the same importance that Full Collapse had for me, but its overall as good as anything else they've ever written, and thats saying something.
