Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer
Directed by: Tim Story
Screenplay by: Don Payne, Mark Frost

More than anything, I would say that this is a look at celebrities; their life in the limelight, the struggles of people hanging on their every word and move, and their overall acceptance and enjoyment of it in the end. Sure, there is plenty of action, as the Silver Surfer (who looks awesome) tries to destroy the Earth and Dr. Doom is ressurected from the dead, and the continuation of the love story between Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) and Sue Storm(this is where the celebrity metaphors come in), but I think the overall message from this movie is that celebrities have a duty to the public (although they don't actually save the world regularly) that they must abide by.

I'm not sure Laurence Fishburne's deep baritone voice works as the voice for The Silver Surfer. I don't know what type of voice I was expecting, but it wasn't that. He is, however, the most intriguing character in the film, as there is an aura of mystery surrounding him as he battles his own right and wrong while trying to destroy the Earth at the same time. The other characters are pretty transparent and stock characters, though they are entertaining enough to keep my interest.

I didn't enjoy this film as much as the first one, but I think a big reason for that is that I had no expectations for the first one, and I was looking forward to this one. This franchise will never have the appeal of Spiderman and X-Men, but its a pretty decent second teir comic book superhero flick that won't leave much of an impact, but won't have you leaving the theatre before its over.
