I should admit that I have never seen any of the Halloween movies, and I probably wouldn't have seen this one had a friend not coerced me into going. Its not that I didn't have any interest in seeing it, I just figured that I would wait until it came out on video, and then forget to put it in my Netflix Queue.
It turns out that this was a pretty entertaining movie. Having not seen the Halloween films before, I didn't have any expectations, and the story was foreign to me, having not seen it before. Its your basic psycho horror film, sexed up with pretty girls topless (which seems to be all the rave since Hostel), and some pretty damn gory parts that may not be all that scary, but will leave the viewer a little grossed out. This shows the origin of how Michael Myers (played as a child by Daeg Faerch, who looks strangely like Aaron Gillespie, and as an adult by Taylor Mane) came to be a sereal killer. The story itself seemed to have jump to quick conclusions, with everything happening a little too fast (I would call it an overreaction to getting picked on and having to go trick or treating by himself), but it is the most interesting part of the film. Malcolm McDowell does a wonderful job as Dr. Samuel Loomis, the therapist who tries to help Myers but is unsuccessful, as Myers becomes catatonic after awhile. You can really believe that this man is looking out for the best interests of Myers, that he really wants to help him, even if it becomes a lost cause right from the start. The rest of the film, from what I've read, is a rehash of the original story. Its a good watch, but it doesn't live up to beginning of the film, as there are some holes and many questions arise (how does Myers get that damn big make paper mache masks all day?).
There are a few frightening scenes, one which even brought a girl in the theatre to screams, but I wasn't on the edge of my seat in fear, it was more interest as to what was going to happen next. It didn't seem like Zombie set out to make the world's greatest movie, but he did a good job of keeping the audience entertained throughout. Having not seen the original, I can't tell you if this does it justice or not (though reading angry message boards leads me to conclude that it didn't), but I enjoyed it.
