Larry and His Flask are a band that needs to be seen live to fully grasp their awesomeness. What they bring to the table is difficult to describe, but is well worth the time and money you would spend going to see them. Jesse Marshall took the time to answer these questions.
1. State something interesting about yourself.
I'm a huge Star Trek nerd. I was born into it. Actually, a few of us are big fans. Jesse (the bass player) has some Trek tattoos! Now that's dedication.
2. What do you want to say about All That We Know that would convince people to buy it?
The album was actually made inside of Volcano Rincon de la Vieja. An active volcano located in Costa Rica. If you listen closely, one can actually hear the liquid-hot rock churning and bubbling on some of the softer tracks on the album. Forging an album in the fires of mother nature is no easy task. The fruits of our labors will only truly be plucked once human ears have feasted upon All That We Know, so get a hold of it!
3. Do you find it hard to keep up the intensity of your live shows?
Not really. It's all an adrenaline thing. We could have just gotten to a venue after a 13 hour drive and have to immediately get on stage and play; but we'll still get up there and give it everything that we have. If we we didn't, there would be no reason for this band to be together. Gotta spread the funk.
4. With a band full of musicians that are multi-instrumentalists, is it difficult figuring out who is going to play what instrument when?
No. We all pretty much have our main-squeeze instruments. If we feel that there needs to be some extra things going on in a song, then we'll throw it in there after the main structure is there.
5. Why do you think Americana styled music has made a comeback, especially in punk rock circles?
I think the comeback of folk and Americana has been due to the fact that lots of mainstream music and a lot of underground stuff these days has become so detached from the roots of where it all started. Now we have loads of people that are curious to figure it all out. What, when and where did this all begin? As far as the punk rock connection, I think that it just makes sense really. With all the punk rockers and hobo kids, it's all about community. And what's better than having a basement full of kids tearing it up to a puck rock band? A basement full of kids that are the band! You get five kids with acoustic guitars, a few banjos, washboard, stand-up bass, kazoo...the list goes on and on. You've got yourself a genuine band of gypsies ready to get drunk and pass out.
6. How did Warped Tour compare with your normal gigs?
DAYTIME!! We are such creatures of the night. Everything we do is at night. We sleep all day then go to the show..AT NIGHT! The Warped Tour was really great for us though. We learned so much and met some wonderful people. One big difference about the tour from other ones is that there are SO many bands, you get to know so many great people while you're on the tour, bands and crew alike. It really was a dream for us.
7. What are your upcoming plans?
We're doing a tour that starts late September and we'll be out until mid November. We're going out with some friends of ours called Lionize. They also we're on the Warped Tour this year. It's gonna be a full U.S. and Canadian tour. We're hittin' a couple of festivals, Riot Fest in Philly and Riot Fest Chicago, as well as Fest in Gainesville, FL. We're going to Hawaii for the first time in January!
8. How long do you think it takes before fans start wanting new music from a band?
It depends on the band, I think. I'd like to say a year and a half to two years before fans start getting impatient. As far as I go though, I would rather the band take their time and make a good record than pump out some immediate bullshit.
9. Whats a little known fact about Oregon?
Mill Ends Park in Portland, the world’s smallest official park, measures two feet across. It was created in 1948 for the leprechauns, and a place to hold snail races on St. Patrick’s Day. But wait there's more! Oregon residents own one-fourth of the country’s total llama population!
