My first experience with Reflux was watching them totally blow me away at Metal Fest. I soon after wrote interview questions and somehow found their guitarist, Tosin Abasi, and asked him if I could interview him. He said yes and here it is:
PL: Start by introducing yourself.
TA: I'm Tosin Abasi from Reflux.
PL: Does it seem like big festivals like this are becoming too commercial?
TA: Well, as a genre, its growing, so it is becoming more commercial. I think its good because all these bands that are playing this genre of music that is seemingly obscure and non-commercial, and now its getting a lot of prominence. It works out.
PL: Whats the best part of playing a big festival like this?
TA: Exposure. People see you that wouldn't normally see you.
PL: Do you look back and judge your live performances?
TA: Yeah, a lot of times we'll tape them. Its kind of like watching a game. We try to just play as well as possible.
PL: What aspects do you look at when you're watching the tape?
TA: Well, we usually look at two parts: tightness, as a unit, but you've got to perform and visually be great. So, those two things: as long as we sound tight and look pretty good.
PL: Whats a little known fact about Savannah, GA?
TA: Its one of the oldest cities in the country, if not the first.
PL: What was your favorite childhood movie?
TA: The Goonies.
PL: Name one album, besides your own, that you think all kids should have in their collection.
TA: Messugha-I.
PL: Do you have any final comments?
TA: Listen to Frank Gambale. He's an amazing jazz music player. Thats all.
