Scarlet has a pretty rad new album out on Ferret Records entitled Cult Classic, but this interview really doesn't have much to do with that, as I usually ask random questions that interest me and that I won't be able to read in other interviews (even though I do ask some generic questions as well).
PL: State your name and what you do in the band.
R: I'm Randy and I play guitar.
A: I'm Andreas and I play drums.
PL: How bad does this suck? Losing power right before you're about to go on.
R: It kind of sucks really bad because I'm really sick and I just want to play and then go to bed.
A: Its kind of nice though, because I wasn't ready to play. It was way hot in there so now the whole place will cool down some, if it turns back on.
PL: So, now does this kill any momentum?
A: I was just starting to get psyched up to play, so I don't know.
R: I'm not psyched at all to play because I feel like shit, but it'll change.
PL: Are lost friends and enemies made an inevitable part of the music business?
A: Not necessarily making enemies, but losing friends definitely can happen.
R: Have we lost any friends?
A: Not really, but I can see...
R: I'm sure it will happen eventually. We try to stay on good terms with everyone.
PL: Does bad sound at a show have a negative affect on...while you guys are playing, do you seem to play worse?
A: Oh yeah; especially stage sound, because it gets horrible if you can't hear whats going on around you.
PL: Do you leave shows like that with just feeling pretty bad?
A: Yeah; you kind of get bummed out, because, obviously crowd reaction is a big part of playing, and if it doesn't sound good, umm...you get kind of bummed out when you look out
R: And everybody is standing there like: 'Oh man, this sounds bad.'
A: Usually you can tell if stuff just doesn't sound good. But, whenever, like tonight when you know you have awesome monitors and you know that it sounds good out in the crowd; its just a relexed feeling.
PL: So now will you ever play a club that you know sounds bad again if its offered to you?
R: We try to play wherever we can right now. We don't have much say in the matter.
PL: What brough upon the idea of the lightshow?
A: Actually, there should be more to it right now. We had some problems with some of our equipment, but I always wanted to do something that other bands hadn't done; kind of a show. I guess we would rather have some kind of show instead of just get up there.
PL: Do you guys have that set up for tonight?
R: No, there's never enough time at these festivals to set the stuff up.
PL: Whats your take on festivals like this?
R: Its fun when you're done, but the time it takes for you to unload and set up and load back out and all the interviews you have to do, its just really hectic. No offense, but right now its relaxing because we're not doing anything. There's always a lot of stuff you have to get done.
A: You always have to borrow a lot of equipment because there's so many bands playing, and it'd be impossible if every band had all of their stuff inside. Its never fun to play on another drum set.
PL: Do they just have one drum set and you just use your cymbals?
A: I know Upstairs you just use your cymbals and pedals and stuff like that. Downstairs, because there's more space, you can use your drumset. I'm pretty sure Downstairs you borrow cabinets. I think the headlining bands use their own stuff.
PL: Would you rather play festivals like this or a regular club show?
A: Regular club show.
R: Regular club show. Its more relaxing.
A: Plus, then you know that more of a crowd is there to see you. When you play festivals like this, there only might be 20% of the kids who are interested in you and the rest of them are just waiting for the next band. Unless you're one of the main headlining bands.
R: I'm sure these shows are great for headliners.
PL: How does the artwork...do you guys have anything to do with the artwork?
R: No, that was mainly our singer collaborating with Ryan Clarke. They mainly put it together for that, which was based off of lyrical content and stuff like that.
PL: How would you feel if your band ended up breaking up tomorrow?
R: Start another band. It'd suck, but I'd start another band.
A: Hopefully, when you're in a band, its not to get rich or to get famous or anything like that. Its obviously about the music, but its fun to travel and we've all done that, so we'd probably all start other bands. But, right now, we're doing exactly what we want to do.
PL: Do you guys have anything else that you want to say?
R: Our drummer's wearing flip flops.
A: We just did a Uranium interview and the entire interview was about me wearing flip flops.
PL: I didn't even notice.
A: I don't care.
R: But the chick from Uranium definitely seemed to notice. She gave him hell.
PL: Do you guys even like doing interviews like this?
R: I don't mind it.
A: Its always weird when you're walking up and you're not thinking about stuff and you're just like Woah.
R: You should ask Rickie a question now.
PL: Do you guys have one for her?
R: Are we your boys?
Rickie: You're my boys.
R: We're her boys.
Rickie: We go deep.
R: We go way back.
Rickie: So deep I put her ass to sleep.
PL: Do you guys have anything else you want to say or plug?
R: Nothing, thats it. I'm going retarded by now.
