Shook Ones are an awesome melodic punk/hardcore band from Bellingham, Washington. Their latest release, Slaughter of the Insole; a 7" on Revelation Records, features two amazing originals and a Leatherface cover, which I'm guessing is just a sign of whats to come on their upcoming full length, which they are currently in the process of writing. This interview went down via Email with guitarist, Kelly.
* 1. State you name and the craziest thing you've ever done.*
My name is Kelly, I play guitar, and I have a tattoo of a heart (that looks
like a strawberry) with Danny from Sinking Ships' name on my shoulder.
* 2. Vinyl seems to be fading fast in music scenes. Why did you choose to release a 7" EP instead of a CD EP? *
We're all music nerds and we wanted to be able to say we had a 7".
Personally, I've always wanted to be in a band that had 7", and I was
fucking stoked for that to finally happen. Plus, there's something way more
fulfilling about vinyl EP's, I think, regardless of its marketability.
* 3. Does it bother bands to get constantly get compared to more well established bands? *
Not really. Most of the bands we get compared to - Lifetime, Kid Dynamite,
Jawbreaker - are bands we all really like and respect, so it's generally
more flattering than anything else. I don't think we've ever been compared
to anything that's bummed us out, except maybe Taking Back Sunday once, but
I fucking love that band so Scott can bite me.
* 4. If you could take credit for writing someone else's song, which one would you choose and why? *
Sick question! I'd go with maybe 'Falling For You' or 'Tired of Sex' by
Weezer. There are other songs I like more, but I feel like those songs - and
most of the songs on Pinkerton - are examples of some seriously brilliant
songwriting. That whole record has just such an amazing balance of pop
hooks, genuine emotion, and furious rock, not to mention brutally honest and
eloquent lyrics. Plus, I wish I could solo like Rivers used to.
* 5. Make three statements about the songwriting process for your upcoming full length. *
1) Nasty is going insane.
2) I'm doing everything I can to get us compared to Taking Back Sunday more.
3) Scott wrote a solo track.
* 6. If you had to eat an entire 14 ounce box of cereal in an hour and a half, which would you choose and why?*
I'm more of a yogurt and granola dude these days, but I used to be addicted
to Special K with strawberries. It was pretty good by itself, but when you
added vanilla soymilk it achieved this magical quality. And there's no way
it would take me an hour and a half to do that. 30 minutes, tops.
* 7. State a little known fact about Revelation Records. *
British people work there.
* 8. Name one album, besides your own, that you think all kids should have in their collection.*
I would say everyone should go out and buy something they've heard is
really, legimately good but don't think they would like. Try to broaden your
horizons a bit, give something new a chance. I always thought people were
full of shit when they talked about how good certain records were and later
found out they were really fucking good. Or just go buy Jersey's Best
Dancers, cause it's pretty much perfect.
* 9. State anything else you'd like to say. *
Go big or go home. Thanks for interviewing me/us.
