This Moment is a great band from California. They recently released "Finding a Voice in the Dark" on Uprising Records that is well worth checking out. This interview was done, after much procrastination on my part, via Email with Sean and Matt.
1. State your name and one interesting fact about yourself.
Sean: Sean Dougherty - I'm ambidextrous.
Matt: Matt Lafferty and I can't eat ice cream unless my feet are on something smooth, otherwise I cringe as if someone is scratching their fingernails on a chalkboard.
2. How will the high(er) prices of gas impact bands with touring plans?
Sean: Higher gas prices will obviously affect touring bands, big or small. I'd say for us it will most likely sacrifice our once a week hotel room, so one less shower to worry about. We will probably call our family and friends more often begging for a credit card number to fill up the tank, which costs roughly 80 - 100 dollars.
Matt: It will make them hungrier...therefore crankier and then they'll start bugging their label for cash...it's no good I tell you.
3. Are you excited about going on the road? Do you think you'll be able to afford a tour?
Sean: I'm very excited about being on the road, I love touring. Traveling and playing music have been a hobby of mine for quite some time, so getting to do both at the same time is quite the treat. However, I can never actually afford the tour, but that's what credit cards and taco bell are for.
Matt: I'm very excited to be going on tour. Who said anything about being able to afford it:)
4. How do you combat a lack of motivation when it happens?
Sean: To be honest, it's not too often that we are unmotivated. We practice several times a week, some of us driving well over an hour to do so, and stay productive for several hours straight each time. We record idea's a lot, and aren't afraid to tell another member when someone isn't happy. Member changes are not motivating, but every time we've gone through a line-up change it has made being in this band and writing songs so much easier.
Matt: Call up Muttaqi and talk about "Vegan Reich" stories.
5. Whats one trend (doesn't have to be a musical one) that you would like to see disappear?
Sean: Chain letter bulletin posts on myspace.com. Opening one of those makes me want to throw up. I feel bad for people that are that bored and have nothing better to do with their time.
Matt: Selfishness.
6. Whats one movie everyone should go see?
Sean: Crash. Best movie I've seen in years.
Matt: Top Gun
7. Whats a little known fact about California?
Sean: That Californians have no idea how terrible the weather is across the US, until you tour it in a van trying not to use the A/C to save gas money. Or sleeping in the van at a rest stop in Texas with the worst humidity you've ever felt, and not getting to shower after.
Matt: California earthquakes are actually fun
8. Name one album, besides your own, that you feel all kids should have in their collection.
Sean: Copeland - "In Motion"
Matt: Cave In "Until Your Heart Stops"
9. Final comments.
Sean: Seriously go buy the new Copeland, and the new Between the Buried and Me (or BTBAM as the mid-west kids call it). Heck, while you're at it you could buy ours I guess.
Matt: Be Careful when you wakeboard at 45 mph...see attached photo:)
