I think there were more people outside on the sidewalk than there were in the club. A lot of people showed up late, which made the crowd, full of studded jean jackets and freshly made mohawks, look disappointedly small while Confront played. The people that saw Confront enjoyed them, as there was a non stop circle pit during their set. This was fun to watch, especially the kid who did some slow motion skanking.
Confront have a Boston punk rock sound, full of melody and a little bit of speed. Steve's voice fits really well with their catchy style. The band had a lot of energy on stage, and they were able to get the crowd going.
From Ashes Rise blew the crowd away with their crusty hardcore sound. They didn't stop shredding until they played their last note, leaving the crowd quite blown away. There was a still constant yet much bigger circle pit during their set. Watching the circle pit was like watching a punk rock carousel, as there was a wide array of mohawks, shaved heads, pins, patches and colors rushing by at what looked like warped speed. Do yourself a favor and watch this band live.
I didn't know how Crash and Burn would follow the amazing performance of From Ashes Rise. I'll never know since I was interviewing Dick of the Subhumans during their set. I asked a couple people how their set went, but they didn't watch Crash and Burn either.
The crowd was eagerly anticipating the Subhumans to take the stage. I hate having to wait for bands to go on, especially when I can see them standing on the side of the stage.
The wait was well worth it, as the Subhumans tore through their set like the legends that they are. They opened with "All Gone Dead," and the intensity didn't stop until they hit the last note of "Religious Wars." These guys have so much energy, especially considering how hot it was inside the club. I had to leave the up front area because I couldn't breathe and I was sick of shirtless dudes depositing their sweat on me.
There were a few songs that I would have enjoyed hearing, like "Subvert City," "Til the Pigs Come Round," "Nothing I Can Do;" basically I wanted them to play their whole catalogue, but I'm greedy. The songs they did play didn't disappoint at all. Subhumans owned the stage for the hour they were on it, leaving the crowd in sweat and smiles.
