Its always good to have something to do on Thanksgiving night (or any night, for that matter), and I was stoked that I was able to spend my post family time watching Off With Their Heads. I was even more thrilled to find out that admission was only $5.
I walked in a couple songs into Gunshot Wound's set. I should note that 80% of the bands playing this show were local, but I had only heard Mustache Ride before, letting me listen to the other three bands with fresh ears. I liked their sometimes thrashy, sometimes melodic brand of punk. The speed of the songs was good, and they made use of the fact that everyone was sitting by the bar (which ran out of every possible good beer) by going from the floor to the stage (which I noticed didn't have the fence anymore). Their last song didn't quite fit in with everything else they played, as they ended with about five minutes of old style screamo experimentation (think Saetia). They didn't blow me away, but they are a band that I'll be keeping an eye on in the future.
The Fake Boys started with an awesome cover of "Breed" by Nirvana and followed it up with an equally good cover of "Silly Girl" by the Descendents. Their originals didn't come close to measuring up, and I found myself getting really bored really fast. They played pop punk, but there wasn't anything about the music that was memorable. Josh and I skipped out on their set to listen to some old demos of bands we were in together that I had found. Luckily, he had a tape player in his car.
We walked back into Jake's about (from what I've been told) a half hour into Coma Coma's set. They were basically a jam flavored rock band, which didn't sit too well with me or anyone I was with. The songs were much too long and nothing they played sounded all that impressive. Everyone in the club seemed relieved when they announced that they were going to play one more song, but were quickly denied.
I like Mustache Ride, but they didn't sound that good on this night. Overly wasted, as usual, the singer was fun to watch, but they played the songs a little bit slower than I'm used to, which killed some of the energy. They didn't sound terrible, and they had people singing along and enjoying their set, especially one super punk type guy, but I've seen them play better.
A decent amount of people left before Off With Their Heads took the stage, which was a shame, as their set was outstanding. They didn't seem detered by the lack of people in the club, putting in a spirited performance that had the people there dancing and singing along.
The guitars were pretty loud, which made their Cock Sparrar sounding solos sound that much clearer, even though they sometimes drowned out the vocals. The drummer looked like his head would explode if he looked anywhere but straight forward with his eyes locked on something, but he was solid. The band parlayed a lot of energy, making me wish that I had every word memorized so I could have sung along with the other people who were, having a great time in the process.
