I had to read the press release twice when I initally saw that Converge and Dropdead were releasing a split. Even though it was only one song each, these are two of the most legendary and influential bands in underground heavy music, and putting them together was more appealing than the first Olympic Dream Team.
Converge's contribution to this split is a muddy sounding song, but its pretty damn good. The drumming is fast as hell and full of fills. The guitar work sticks to a fast, almost crusty style (that actually reminds me of Dropdead), with a few leads thrown in there to mix things up. As usual, Converge packs a lot of music into a two minute song.
As fast as "Paths of Glory" is, its a little slower than a lot of Dropdead songs. This is a speedy, crusty burst of hardcore that makes me want to dust off my old Dropdead records. Its quick and to the point, with a pretty great (albeit simple) bridge thrown in there (its not a "breakdown," but it'll get people dancing). Bob Otis' voice has lost a little harshness (I can make out some words), but this is everything I'd expect from a Dropdead song.
This split needs to be purchased by anyone that digs any kind of heavy music. Its like the fathers came back to show the kids how things should be done.
