‘Heat 2’: Michael Mann Says De-Aging Will Be Important To Film & He May Experiment With AI

As Michael Mann continues developing “Heat 2,” the filmmaker has opened up about his plans to incorporate cutting-edge technology — including de-aging techniques and possible AI tools — to realize his long-awaited sequel. Mann confirmed that the film, which will shoot across several continents, is now targeting a summer 2026 production start.

“I don’t experiment with technology gratuitously,” Mann said recently at the the Lumiere Film Festival in Lyon, France where he received the 2025 Lumiere Award. “If I have a dramatic need or aesthetic need for it, then I go deep into what I need. For example, aging and de-aging will be very important in the film.”

The director emphasized that any technological experimentation will serve the story, which spans multiple timelines and follows both younger and older versions of familiar characters. Mann noted that these innovations are key to the film’s scale and ambition: “Heat 2 is… an expensive movie to make, but I believe it should be made at the proper size and scale. It’s going to shoot in Chicago, Los Angeles, Paraguay, and possibly some parts in Singapore.”

The project has moved from Warner Bros. to Amazon and United Artists, a shift Mann attributes to the film’s production complexity and Amazon’s evolving theatrical aspirations. “Amazon is in transition, which is why they bought Bond,” he said. “They’re in a transition to become something more than a streaming service. They have ambitions to be a major, I don’t want to speak for Amazon, a major figure in exhibition, in theatrical. The potential, because the movie would come out in almost two years from now, the potential of the synergy within Amazon is massive.”

Meanwhile, casting rumors continue to swirl. Leonardo DiCaprio is reportedly being considered for the younger version of Chris Shiherlis — the role originated by Val Kilmer — with Adam Driver, Austin Butler, and Bradley Cooper also rumored to be in the mix.

Based on the 2022 novel co-written by Mann and Meg Gardiner, “Heat 2” serves as both a prequel and sequel to the 1995 classic, continuing the saga of characters played by Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Kilmer through new generations and timelines.

With Mann exploring AI-driven visual effects and advanced de-aging techniques, “Heat 2” could redefine how filmmakers bridge eras — blurring the line between performance, memory, and technological reinvention.
